Performing Arts

"The theater is the place the audience goes to be entertained but leaves having their hearts stirred and their minds changed. I look to change the collective consciousness about the role of women through my work in the theater."

Laura Bell Bundy - Actor

Women are underrepresented in many areas of the performing arts.  While women are reported to make up 60% of theater audience members, less than a quarter of produced plays are written by women. Women in theatre are faced with issues such as misrepresentation, sexist archetypes and ageism on stage. While progress has been made, there are few women serving as artistic directors at major regional theaters and even fewer in technical positions. Moreover, women have a challenging path to even prepare themselves for these positions. Even more surprising, most produced plays and musicals have casts that are majority male, with stories focused on male leading characters.

Kvinnelig Foundation will address this imbalance in two ways with an objective to provide more opportunities for female artists while working to support and empower them in their work.

First, the Foundation will operate as a theatrical performing arts organization focused on telling stories for, about, and by women.  This will include producing works written by female playwrights and composers, with majority female casts, supported by majority female directing and technical staff, and telling stories focused on the female experience.

Second, the Foundation will provide grants to 501(c)(3) organizations which share this area of focus.
